International problem: Over fishing Fishing once thought of as a leisure activity is now causing serious issues on the marine environment. Fishing, when taken to the extreme can cause species to deplete in numbers and over turn the natural food chain. Many people are involved in over fishing all over the world. The reasons they take part in the practise are also altering. However many of the fisherman are from poorer countries and they see it as, the more fish they return home with the more they will be paid.

There have been many measures introduced to help prevent over fishing occurring although we could do more. Over fishing is a serious global issue which needs to be addressed before it is too late and we loose the many different species of fish we love in our oceans. Over fishing occurs when fishing activities reduce fish stocks below an un-acceptable level. This can occur in any body of water from a pond to the oceans. Over fishing is a serious issue to the ocean and its natural food chains as it can result in the depletion of a species of fish to the level of extinction.

This may not seem like such a major problem. However if a type of fish species was to become extinct it would result in a domino effect. The producers, which are photosynthetic organisms like plankton, have a key role in the food chain as they the base and all of the energy for the system comes from them. These producers are then eaten by the consumers like small fish. These small fish aren’t always the fish which are hunted by humans but they do play a major part in the food chain as these are the animals which are eaten by the big fish.

The bigger fish are however the type of fish we do prey upon for food. If these animals are over fished and there numbers are depleted to the crisis level, it can affect the food chain astronomically. By the number of little fish becoming out of control because they aren’t being eaten by the big fish, the little fish will then exhaust the numbers of plankton around and the whole food chain will tip out of wack. Over fishing also has a major effect on our society. There are many people from all over the world who are involved with the practise.

It all comes down to the fisherman as they are the ones who cause overfishing by catching to many fish. However there might be a reason why they continue to catch to many fish. One of the main reasons is because of job security. For example: fishermen are paid on how many kilos of fish they catch and bring back to port. The more fish, the more money they receive. Often the fisher men which do take part in over fishing are from poorer countries and will do anything for an extra dollar. Over fishing has an effect on the wholesalers to.

The wholesalers buy the fish and make it into food, so if overfishing keeps occurring then the wholesalers will have no business anymore which would end in bankrupts for many people. Finally us as the consumers are affected. This is because we buy the food and eat it… So if over fishing continues to occurring and we run out of fish it will make many people sick because wish is a heavy part of their diet. The impacts of over fishing aren’t just on the ocean and its wild life. It does take a heavy toll on us as consumers and if over fishing does continue to happen and the number of species of fish does decrease we could be in serious trouble.

There have been many rules adopted by ports and the fishing industry in general to prevent over fishing form occurring. Measures such as quotas on the amount of fish which is allowed to be caught, these quotas are enforced by fishing inspectors stationed at each port. Square nets have also been introduced to prevent catching fish that have not yet matured. Instead of diamond shaped nets they are square, this is to allow smaller fish through the gaps in the nets and this reduces the bycatch and helps in allowing the smaller not yet matured fish to escape.

Some things we can do to prevent over fishing from occurring is things like simply selecting fish for our dinner plate which are not on the endangered lists. There are many new regulations which have been introduced to prevent or at least slow down how much fish we are catching to put onto our dinner plates. However we can and should do a lot more to stop over fishing as it is going to have a huge effect on our lives and the lives of our children. Over fishing is a practice that we must do everything in our power to stop.

These days we can go down to the beach, the spit or a reef and your guaranteed to see some types of marine life. In the not to distant future however as our kids head down to the beach all they will see is themselves and their friends swimming around in a dirty ocean. Over fishing is a huge problem and there should be more done to slow it down or bring it to a Holt. We have started to see the error of our ways and have made a few changes to stop it from happening. This is a step forward and as they stay “we have to start somewhere. ”
