The sightlessness of the papists is great and arch ; for they will neither believe the Gospel nor output thereunto, but self-praise of the church and say: She has power to change and to make what she pleases ; for, say they, Christ gave his organic structure to his adherents in the eventide after supper ; but we receive it fasting, therefore we may, harmonizing to the church ‘s regulation, detain the cup from the temporalty. The nescient wretches are non able to separate between the cup, which pertains to the substance of the sacrament, and fasting, which is an inadvertent, animal thing, of no weight at all. The 1 has God ‘s express word and bid, the other consists in our will and pick. We urge the one, because God has commanded it ; the other we leave to the election of the will, though we better like it to be received fasting, out of award and fear.

CCCLVII.

It is a admiration how Satan brought into the church, and ordained, but one sort of the sacrament to be received. I can non name to mind that of all time I read how, whence, or for what cause it was so altered. It was foremost so ordained in the council of Constance, where nil, nevertheless, is pleaded but merely the usage.

CCCLVIII.

The papists extremely boast of their power and authorization, which they would volitionally corroborate with this statement: the apostles altered baptism ; hence, say they, the bishops have power to change the sacrament of the Lord ‘s supper. I answer: admit that the apostles altered something ; yet there is a great difference between an apostle and a bishop ; an apostle was called instantly by God with gifts of the Holy Ghost ; but a bishop is a individual selected by adult male, to prophesy God ‘s words, and ordain retainers of the church in certain topographic points. So, though the apostles had this power and authorization, yet the bishops have non. Although Elijah slew Baal ‘s priests and the false Prophetss, it is non permitted that every priest shall make the like. Hence St Paul makes this difference: “ Some hath he given to be apostles, some instructors, some to be curates and curates, ” etc. Among the apostles was no domination or opinion ; none was greater or higher in office than another ; they were all equal, the 1 with the other. The definition as to the domination and regulation of St Peter above other bishops is false ; it reaches further than they define it ; they conclude therefore: the Catholic Pope ‘s power and authorization is the highest ; he may enact retainers, alter lands and authoritiess, force out some emperors and male monarchs and enthrone others. But we are in nowise to let of such definitions ; for every definition must be direct and proper, put down field and clear ; so that neither more nor less may in the definition be contained, than that which is described and defined.

CCCLXIX.

They that as yet are non good informed, but stand in uncertainty, touching the establishment of the sacrament, may have it under one sort ; but those that are certain thereof, and yet have it under one sort, act wrongfully and against their scrupless.

CCCLX.

What signifies it to challenge and brawl about the detestable devotion of promoting the sacrament on high to demo it to the people, which has no approbation of the Fathers, and was introduced merely to corroborate the mistakes touching the worship thereof, as though staff of life and vino lost their substance, and retained merely the signifier, odor, gustatory sensation. This the papists call transsubstantiation, and darken the right usage of the sacrament ; whereas, even in popedom, at Milan, from Ambrose ‘s clip to the present twenty-four hours, they ne’er held or observed in the mass either canon or lift, or the Dominus vobiscum.

CCCLXI.

The lift of the sacrament was taken out of the Old Testament ; the Jews observed two signifiers, the one called Thruma, the other Trumpha ; Thruma was when they took an offering out of a basket, and lifted it up above them ( like as they now lift up the oblate ) , and showed the same to our Lord God, after which they either burned or ate it: Trumpha, was an offering which they lifted non up above them, but showed it towards the four corners of the universe, as the papists, in the mass, make crosses and other apelike playthings, towards the four corners of the universe.

When I foremost began to observe mass in popedom, and to do such crossings with fantastic distortions of the fingers, and could non rightly hit the manner, I said: “ Mary, God ‘s female parent, how am I plagued with the mass, and particularly with the crossings. ” Ah, Lord God! we were in those times hapless plagued people, and yet it was nil but mere devotion. They terrified some in such kind with the words of consecration, particularly good and reverent work forces who meant earnestly, that they trembled and quaked at the pronouncing of these words: Hoc est principal meum, for they were to articulate them, sine ulla hesitatione ; he that stammered, or left out but one word, committed a great wickedness. Furthermore, the words were to be spoken, without any abstraction of idea, in such a manner, that merely he must hear them that spake them, and none of the people standing by. Such an honest mendicant was I fifteen old ages together ; the Lord of his clemency forgive me. The lift is utterly to be rejected by ground of the adoring thereof. Some churches, seeing we have put down the lift, have followed us therein, which gives me great satisfaction.

CCCLXII.

The operative cause of the sacrament is the Word and establishment of Christ, who ordained it. The substance is bread and vino, prefiguring the true organic structure and blood of Christ, which is spiritually received by religion. The concluding cause of establishing the same, is the benefit and the fruit, the strengthening of our religion, non doubting that Christ ‘s organic structure and blood were given and shed for us, and that our wickednesss by Christ ‘s decease surely are forgiven.

CCCLXIII.

Question was made touching the words “ given for you, ” whether they were to be understood of the present administering, when the sacrament is distributed, or of when it was offered and accomplished on the cross? I said: I like it best when they are understood of the present administering, although they may be understood as fulfilled on the cross ; it matter non that Christ says: “ Which is given for you, ” alternatively of: “ which shall be given for you: ” for Christ is Hodie et Heri, to-day and yesterday. I am, says Christ, he that doeth it. Therefore, I approve that Datur be understood in such mode, that it show the usage of the work. It was similarly asked, whether award and fear were to be shown to the sacrament? I said: When I am at the communion table, and receive the sacrament, I bow my articulatio genuss in honor thereof ; but in bed I receive it lying.

They that do non keep the sacrament as Christ instituted it, have no sacrament. All papists do non, therefore they have no sacrament ; for they receive non the sacrament, but offer it. Furthermore, they administer but one sort, contrary to Christ ‘s work and regulation, and non adult male ‘s. The papists err in imputing to the sacrament, that it justifies, ex opere operato, when the work is fulfilled.

CCCLXV.

These words, “ Drink ye all of it, ” concern, say the papists, merely the priests. Then these words must besides concern merely the priests, where Christ says: “ Ye are clean, but non all, ” that is, all the priests.
