Sex role stereotypes have a lot to do with the experience of emotions because of how we cognitively label a given situation.  We expect men and women to behave with certain expected emotional responses and have expected responses to those situations.  When emotions are revealed that fall outside of those expectations the self perception and subsequent qualitative labeling of that situation can take wrong turns.  A large emotional response in a woman is expected and therefore less severe than a large emotional response from a man is not necessarily a true statement but it is a learned response to labeling and experiencing a situation according to the theory put forth by Schachter and Singer.
