Many youngsters are involved in alcohol and drug abuse on a daily basis; whether it be in the neighborhood, school, or in the playground. Nowadays, parents are giving their children more freedom than compared to 10 years ago. Children are also maturing at a faster rate than in the past which leads to them wanting to do things that are not normal for there age. Much of this has to do with the increase in technology. The youth are learning and being introduced to a lot of things such as drugs and alcohol through the internet, television, and radio.
Drug and alcohol abuse is a serious problem among many young people. In most cases the youth seem to care more on popularity than grades. The hype on being cool and loved by others over takes what is most important in there young age. It’s easy to get tangled up in drugs and alcohol if there aren’t strong parental figures in a child’s upbringing. A majority of the time it boils down to a youngster knowing someone who they may find cool, who drinks or does drugs. The highest rate of drug use is found among youth ages 18-20, with marijuana the most commonly used drug.
Most youngsters feel that these habits make them fit in with other kids. Some of the youth may not have a schedule that keeps them busy, so they may find themselves experimenting with drugs or alcohol. Youth that have a full schedule such as sports and recreational activities often stay away from drugs and alcohol due to the fact that they don’t have time for it. Kids often like to be rebellious. No matter how much a mother or father my try to teach them, some youth find themselves out there on drugs and alcohol.
A lot of kids that experiment with drugs and alcohol at such a young age have a poor relationship with there parents, or they may feel emotionally separated from their parents. Children in today’s society are not getting the one-on-one relationship that they were receiving long ago. Teenagers whose parents talk to them regularly about the dangers of drugs and alcohol are less likely to use these substances than those whose parents don’t. If the youth are brought up on good teaching then they will already have a good understanding on drugs and alcohol. The key is prevention.
With the right care and nurturing parents can help avoid their kids from encountering drugs and alcohol. The youth should understand the effects of drug and alcohol abuse. By them understanding what it can do to them it makes them think about there future. Basically peer pressure plays the biggest role in whether or not a child experiments with drugs and alcohol. By surrounding your child with positive things in life they will grow on that instead of wondering out on drugs and alcohol. Being up to date with whom and where your child hangs out is very important when it comes down to drug and alcohol abuse.
