Research the use of food additives in convenience foods.
Using a convenience food of my choice, carry out a comparative analysis with a homemade alternative. Identifying Issues For this task, I have to research the role of additives in convenience foods and identify if they are really essential in the food. I will compare convenience foods with additives in to the additive free homemade alternative and create a sensory analysis on both products, because of this I will compare the products and analyse them. (The comparative analysis).
What I have to do Find out the function and dangers of additives in the diet. To do this I could look into books, leaflets, magazines and on websites. Find out how many additives people consume daily by constructing a dietary diary for a range of people and construct graphs to show how many different additives we eat in a day. I could create a questionnaire asking people about their awareness of additives in the foods they eat; I could also ask them what products they think contain additives. I will look into books and websites to identify which foods contain higher amounts of additives especially the “dangerous additives”.I will look into a convenience food analyse its additives and see how the product can be improved more like the homemade alternative.
For my practical work I will create a homemade alternative to a food which contains many additives, I will compare the cost and compare the sensory analysis of the two products. The role of additives in the diet? The roles of additives are set out into seven different groups; 1) Preservatives are used to help keep food safer for longer. Any processed food with a long shelf-life is likely to include preservatives.2) Antioxidants are used with any food containing any fat or oils they are used to stop the fats/oils going rancid quickly.
3) Sweeteners are used as a replacement of sugar to make products sweet, as we aim to eat less sugar; many of us are turning to sweeteners. 4) Emulsifiers/thickeners/stabilizers aid in mixing ingredients together that would normally separate – (oil and water). 5) Flavour enhancers are used to bring out the flavour in a particular product without adding a flavour of their own and making the product more attractive.
6) Food colourings are used to make it more attractive. Otherwise we would have unattractive/unappetising looking sweets and white carrots and peas!7) Nutrients are used in foods to increase the foods nutritional value; whereas it can be lacking nutrients and there for can lead to deficiencies. The definition of an additive; An additive is used to help food keep safe for longer, to use them as an alternative nutrient, to stop fats and oils going rancid, to keep a food stable, to make it look more attractive and to make it taste better, overall the role of an additive is to consistently maintain the high quality of foods.
